Domestic violence is assault in a domestic background. Domestic relationship includes common-law relationship, married relationship and same-sex relationship. It also extends to former partners.
Domestic violence is still assault but based on subjective facts, between intimate partners or former intimate partners. The maximum punishment is five years of imprisonment if crown proceeds by indictment or six months of imprisonment and a penalty of $5,000 as fine if crown proceeds by summary conviction.
